LAUGHTER HELPS HUMANS LIVE LIFE
– – – By Brigadier Chitranjan Sawant,VSM
Ha Ha Ha –a loud laugh without any inhibitions – well, that is how the session on laughter begins and also ends. Interesting indeed. A number of public parks in India that is Bharat are full of people, young and old, men and women who wish to laugh but have been bereft of occasions and company where a loud laugh is encouraged. There are segments of society in developing countries where the growing girls are taught to be modest, inward bound and while in a family group activity, should be seen and not heard. Such girls have a subdued growth and rarely blossom into cheerful women raring to enjoy life and living and ever ready to pass on all that is Positive to the next generation. The boys do a shade better as yjey are permitted to move around and be outward bound. Nevertheless, they too have to learn a lot to be healthy and happy. The road tohappiness is named laughter and the subdued boys and girls have to learn how to shake off inhibitions and attain freedom to grow.
I see humour here, there and everywhere. I have developed the spontaneity of seeing and experience the lighter side of the situation. If I can describe a situation in the lighter vein, it brings a smile on listeners’ faces. In some, there is ear to ear grin. Some do lend a little sound to situation that is audible in that circle. In any case, it is the sense of humour that helps an individual or a group of human beings break ice and smile. Indeed that is the beginning of your travel on the road leading to health and happiness through Humour and Laughter.
A sense of humour is inborn. It is a birthday gift from God. It is Divine. It is a treasure that you may draw upon and it is never exhausted. The more humorous you are, the healthier and happier you will be. The plus point is that men, women and children around you will be happy too.
Laughter is a by-product of Humour. The two are inseparable identical twins and grow well in each others company. A question arises ; what happens to those who are born sans a sense of humour. Will they be sad and morose all their lives? The answer is a big NO. Humour is present in every human being, the person has to recognize it, cultivate it further, make use of it and share it with society.
The sharing and caring aspect of ones social personality will be ever helpful in the alround development of his or her personality. Just take a step forward, others may take two steps to embrace you and benefit from your humour and laughter.
A spark of humour may develop into a flame of benefit, if you care for it. Every situation in life has a touch of humour, somewhere in big measure and somewhere in small measure. Just know the situation, catch hold of it, use it and do not let go until you have achieved the desired result. Of course, to say something serious in a lighter vein requires efforts and one has to work on it painstakingly. Take it from me, a man with half a centurys experience in the sphere of humour and in the realm of laughter, that it wont be loves labour lost. Your effort will be rewarded and that too in ample measure.
GAINS FROM A HEARTY LAUGH
Indeed the laughter should be from the heart and soul has to be in it. A laugh with heart and soul is the biggest benefactor of the man who cares to laugh. The Readers Digest has been running a column regularly entitled“Laughter The Best Medicine”and the column is read with great interest. May I suggest that it would be appropriate to rename the column as “ Laughter – the Best Preventive Medicine”. One who laughs a lot is bound to save on medical bills. Even unpleasant events emanating from day to-day verbal duels wont be allowed to affect your mind adversely because a laughing man or woman inculcates the ability to “ Laugh It Off. In other words, what bothers the non-laughing man wont bother a person with a sense of humour. The latter never mulls over petty matters that may turn mentally obnoxious. The jovial fellow burns the rubbish with Fire generated by synergy produced by laughter.
However, should a jolly fellow ever fall ill due to reasons beyond his control, he has a self-generated lifeline to hold on to and survive. Well, it is LAUGHTER again. Sickness will vanish into thin air once the sick jolly fellow gives a hearty laugh from the bottom of his stomach – the point that makes a word of command on Parade heard and obeyed.
Ayurveda , Unani, Allopathic or Homoeopathic – all forms of treatment of human illness are unanimous in their opinion on one matter: Laughter is the most effective medication to mind, body and soul when our jolly fellow is laid up in bed coping with the attack of sundry germs, some of whom remained undetected despite the expensive medical equipment imported by private practitioners. Generally speaking, softening the soul when ruffled is the exclusive prerogative of the priest well versed in the realm of the Vedas, the source of divine knowledge. However, Laughter crosses all barriers, be it divine or devilish.
With a view to generating a healthy environment, performance of Havan is highly recommended. Notwithstanding presence of noble souls at the Havan Sthal and chanting of Ved mantras, the effective presence of evil spirits there cannot be totally ruled out. It generated a saying: “ wherever and whenever there is a Yajna , the Rakshasas are bound to make their presence felt by their devilish designs.” Counter them by force and if sufficient force is not under your command, laugh off the adverse situation and carry on with your noble mission. In nine cases out of ten, the Rakshasas will beat a hasty retreat rather than face the divine forces of Rishis combined with that of the Kshatriyas. The men and women who laugh and keep their sense of humour using it in a cool-headed manner would win the battle before it begins.
HEART WEAKENS NOT
God forbid, if you have a weak heart, use Yogic exercises including Pranayam and Laughter, to restore it to robust health. Laughter helps making heart strong and robust. The effective medicine is right under your control and you have to use it regularly. The heart that beats under your chest has a lot to do with your morale and the morale must be high. Even sky is not the limit.
You laugh when you are financially, politically, and sexually clean. If the character is vitiated, the person so affected would remain worried most of the time. How can a worried man laugh? Having known the advantages of a good and clean laughter, an individual would not like to touch a scam even with a barge pole. The greed for money is kept under check by the prospects of good physical, mental and moral health. It is a well known fact that a human being cannot serve God and Mammon both at the same time. In the interest of own health and that of the Nation, it would be advisable not to stash the ill gotten wealth in the Swiss banks and thereby harm health of self and the country.
Allow me to state categorically that Love of Lucre must be forsaken for love of a clean and healthy life. If your life is clean and you have not swindled country or compatriots, you will sleep well. A good sleep will help you be cheerful, laugh well and remain healthy. Cardiologists recommend at least six hours sleep for a robust heart. The robustness is augmented with a good full throated laughter.
Many an occasion lower your morale and you need moral reserve to lift your spirits. A man is known by the company he keeps. If you have morose men as your companions, how can you be cheerful? Please choose your companions wisely and see that they are men and women of cheerful disposition, laugh a lot and do not lose their cool on minor matters. It is the leader of the social group wo leads the way to health and happiness. He and his or her companions should be able to crack jokes that are healthy and yet generate laughter. Indeed the group leader must have the capability to generate a joke at his own cost and must have the capacity to laugh at himself. Please take care to crack clean jokes that do not hit your companions, male or female, below the belt. A joke is a joke and not a weapon to maul a passer by or incapacitate a companion against whom you have been nurturing a grudge for the past few weeks.
It would be a good idea to listen to children’s conversation when they are in a playful mood. Many a time they come out with an anecdote or an original story that generates a smile on an adults face too. Humour is nobody’s monopoly. Anyone may come out with a good joke and make you happy.
May I make a mention of my own experience as to how much relaxed I feel when I have laughed a lot and that too without inhibitions. The advantage plus is a sense of Creativity that comes in unannounced. It encourages you to sit at the computer and the fingers become active on the keyboard. It is a spontaneous act and wakes up the hidden writer in you. The end result is that your creative work goes to the press, sees the light of the day in print. Name, fame and mullah follow as a natural corollary.
One who laughs a lot, relaxes a lot. A relaxed man or woman makes correct decision even when in crisis. It is making the right decision at the right time that brings you in focus and the world looks up to you for guidance and leadership. So keep one and all happy and cheerful by remaining healthy and happy yourself.
When you see someone without a smile, give one of yours !
