ARMY APPRECIATED FOR DENTING INSURGENCY
By Brigadier Chitranjan Sawant,VSM
The Indian Army has done it. It did a great job by chasing the Naga insurgents into Myanmar for five kilometers and destroying two of their camps. The Para Commandos of the Indian Army ably assisted by troops of the Assam Rifles knew what to do, when to do and they did it. The Indian Nation has held its head high, thanks to the Indian Army.
The National Socialist Council of Nagaland(Khaplang group) had laid an ambush on 4th June 15 in the Chandel district of Manipur and killed as many as 18 soldiers of the Dogra battalion that was on its way out of the area after finishing their tour of duty. It was a blow to the prestige of the Indian Army as well as to the Indian State.
The Modi government in New Delhi could not have swallowed this insult and blow to the national image.. Pradhan Mantri Narendra Modi gave his assent to take an appropriate action against the Naga rebels who did the dastardly attack. The rebels had strengthened their prowess taking undue advantage of the now on now off ceasefire promulgated in the area of insurgency.
General Dalbir Singh, Chief of the Army Staff cancelled his foreign tour to plan and execute an immediate military action as a fitting reply to the emboldened rebel Nagas. Shri Doval, National Security Advisor skipped his visit to Bangladesh where he was to accompany the Prime Minister. A high level meeting was held, attended by Manohar Parrikar, Raksha Mantri, Shri Doval, Army Chief and it was presided over by Raj Nath Singh, Home Minister. A meticulous plan was drawn and given to the Army for suitable action.
As many as 70 commandos of the Parachute Regiment, assisted by Jawans of the Assam Rifles were flown in across the India-Myanmar international borders in MI-17 helicopters of the Indian Air Force in the morning of 9th June 15, 2015. A few helicopters were kept as stand by, just in case a quick evacuation was required to be effected. Drones of the IAF kept an eye on the operations and were ready to do their bit by bombing the rebels if the military situation so required. The entire operation was overseen by lt General Rawat, General Officer Commanding of 3 Corps based in Ranga Pahar in Dimapur area of Nagaland.
The well trained Para Commandos had their morale sky high. They were assigned to carry out a military mission where our national prestige was involved. They were confident of finishing the task and they achieved the aim in just 40 minutes. They killed over 40 Naga rebels in two camps, destroyed them and even burnt down one where illegal arms were kept for use against India. Our Commandos reached the area of operation as the rebels were planning to launch another deadly attack against the Indian Army deployed in area of insurgency. Their military mischief was nipped in the bud.
The Indian Nation felt proud of their Army which could deliver the goods. The scribes attributed the bold Army action across the international border to the political leadership guided by Pradhan Mantri Narendra Modi.
Are there any international repercussions? None whatsoever. It is our birthright to defend ourselves when an act of insurgency or a foreign attack is imminent. What about bellyaching of retired Generals of Pakistan. Well, they are out of job and wish to be in the news by just calling names and berating India. All said and done, Pakistan is scared that a similar action could be in the offing against terrorists sheltered by that failed state. There is none on the anvil, as of now. Empty vessels make much noise and Pakis are doing just that.
The Indian State just did what it was required to do. No more and no less. No trumpeting is needed now. We scribes must just sit back and watch.
