Jawaharlal Nehru, the then Prime Minister of India made a statement to the Press at the Madras airport while he was on his way to Colombo and said ” I HAVE ORDERED THE INDIAN ARMY TO THROW OUT THE CHINESE” But the Indian Army Chief, General Thapar went public and said he knew nothing about Nehru’s order. It oftened happened in the Congress party led Government that the right hand did not know what the left hand was doing.
Chairman MAO ZEDONG of China told an important American diplomat much later that after Nehru’s inflammatory public statement of Nehru, China had no choice but to return the courtesy to the neighbour.
Nehru was a dreamer and not a pragmatist. Most of India’s woes today are of his making. I am sure the history, written objectively later, will not forgive Jawaharlal Nehru.
